Taproot is the upcoming men’s development group at Harmony Church. We will be going through a couple of awesome writings: the Westminster Shorter Catechism (WSC) and Jonathan Edwards’ 70 Resolutions. The WSC, of course, is a question and answer format of Reformed Theology, and should provide for some awesome discussion. I will require the men to provide Scriptural support for their claims, and we will duke it out over the Bible like men. Theological Fight Club, so to speak. After we work through the WSC, we will move to the Resolutions of Jonathan Edwards, which are partly based off of the WSC, and apply all the theological study to our everyday life; namely, what does it look like for us as men to live to our chief end: “the glory of God” (question 1 in the WSC). Should be fun. In the Taproot Reader are a couple of ‘extra’ readings for their own leisure. I’ve linked the TaprootReader below for anyone’s use. Let me know what you think!

21. I resolve to never do anything that I would hate someone else for doing.

22. I resolve to work to my happiness and delight with all my might and power, as long as it does not conflict with the Gospel.

23. I resolve to analyze my deliberate actions, tracing them back to the original intention. If that intention is contrary to the glory of God and/or the Gospel, I will take the action to break Resolution 4.

24. I resolve to, whenever I do something evil, to trace it back to the original cause, and to fight that cause with all my might and prayer.

25. I resolve to examine myself closely in order to identify the one thing that causes me to doubt God. I will then fight and pray against that one thing with all I am.

26. I resolve to fight and pray against anything that causes me to doubt my salvation.

27. I resolve to never not do something, unless not doing that thing is for the glory of God. I will also constantly examine what things I am not doing.

28. I resolve to constantly study Scripture and to make sure that I am growing in the knowledge of God.

29. I resolve to always pray as if I believe that God will answer it, and to always confess as if God will accept it.

30. I resolve to try every week to grow in knowledge and passion of God, and to be a better example of God’s grace to others than I was the week before.

Having enough sense to know that I can’t do anything without God’s help, I ask Him for His favor as I try to keep these resolutions, as long as they are OK with Him. I aim to keep these for Jesus’ name alone.

Read over these Resolutions once a week.

1. I resolve to live to make Jesus famous and myself happy, as long as the two are not in contradiction. I resolve to keep my responsibilities, and to do what is good for mankind. I resolve that no difficulties will stop me from these resolutions.

2. I resolve to constantly look for ways to make fulfilling resolution 1 easier and more habitual.

3. I resolve that, whenever I forget to keep these resolutions, I will repent and come back to them.

4. I resolve to do nothing but what makes Jesus famous as long as I can help it.

5. I resolve to never waste time, but to make the most of the life I’ve been given.

6. I resolve to live hard.

7. I resolve to live as if I were dying.

8. I resolve to live as if I were the worst person alive, and will keep myself humbled in comparison to others.

9. I resolve to think about death often.

10. I resolve that when I am hurt, to think about the hurt that comes with dying for the Cause or, worse, hell.
