meet the browns

Derek and Miranda Brown were middle-school sweethearts, and it was love at first sight (if you ask him; she isn’t so convinced). After moving around the eastern United States, Derek returned for his lifelong lover (if you ask him; she isn’t so convinced). Miranda had accepted Christ because of His work in her father’s heart during a tough time in high school. Subsequently, Miranda and her family led Derek to Christ when he was 19 years old, and their lives have been a roller coaster since. As it turns out, when you lead a passionate, gutsy, & somewhat immature German-Irishman to Christ, crazy things happen.

After spending time ministering to students of all ages (preschool to college) at Faith Assembly of God (link) in Winterville, NC, Derek fatefully picked up an Assemblies of God periodical, which “happened” to be a issue dedicated to American church planting. Being a relatively-new Christian at the time, Derek was intrigued by this idea. He studied, researched, and was led by God to start churches, following both the will of God for Derek and Miranda in particular, and in the steps of Derek’s maternal grandfather, who was a church planter for the Nazarene denomination.

God, through a series of fortunate events (!), led Derek and Miranda to plant Harmony Church (link) in downtown Greenville, NC, walking distance to East Carolina University (from which both Derek and Miranda graduated) and the rapidly growing Uptown district. The local expression of the Church known as Harmony has been meeting weekly about 18 months now, and is still growing into a community of Gospel-centered & missional disciples of Christ.

The God-given vision of Derek for Harmony Church is to establish a city-wide network of church planting churches that are grounded in Reformed Gospel theology, primarily incarnational in nature, and are centered around the community, not the individual, in practice. With your prayer & financial support, this vision can become reality, and people living in Greenville will know Christ and His glories!

Thanks for your prayers and support,

Derek and Miranda

As a former student at ECU, I longed for a church that would love the campus AND downtown Greenville. Now, as a pastor, my hearts once again longs to see that community transformed by the love of Christ and the power of the Gospel. Thankfully, my prayers have been answered by the work of Derek Brown and Harmony Church.

Derek is obviously passionate about Jesus, the Gospel, and the city of Greenville. He is engaging the culture of our city and causing people to consider the Son of God. We pray for the advancement of churches like Harmony and pastors like Derek at the Boiler Room.

Harmony has ruined me. I grew up in church and used to love to go and enjoy a service. I can’t do this any longer. Now at each service, I am eagerly searching for the gospel in the worship and sermon. Also, I have never seen two people work harder for the gospel as I have seen in Derek and Miranda’s countless wearisome days and shorter nights. All this for the sake that those who are sick may realize the presence of their Physician.

-Brad Beamon, future Medical Student, former ECU Graduate, & current Missionary to Chapel Hill, NC

I came to ECU (moved from RTP area) and had no plans to hang around Greenville. The fellowship and the planting process were exciting and figured I would hang around. The message was even more life-changing as I came to learn more about the influence of Christ in EVERYTHING. I have been a Christian for several years and never did the Gospel enlighten nor impact my life as much as it did when Derek and Miranda ministered the Gospel to me. I am not even sure both Derek and Miranda are aware of the full impact the Gospel has had and will continue to reproduce in my life and marriage till we see each other in heaven.
