Dr. Unk’s and City Zoning

Recently, Dr. Unk’s (the bar where we meet) has met some opposition with the city zoning board. I won’t go into why I think why for a while. I did, however, write a letter to the local newspaper about the issue, and it was published today. Check it out here:

Letter: Zoning Enforcement Should Be Objective

The basic premise is this: Dr. Unk’s has been singled out because they don’t fit a pre-existing image of downtown, and is now being forced out. Little does the city realize the true impact of such a venue in the downtown area. Here’s the text if you can’t get the link for some reason.

Since our church started meeting at Dr. Unk’s this year, I couldn’t help but notice the value the restaurant brings to Uptown. Dr. Unk’s is not a center of Uptown culture, but is a vibrant contributor to the economy as well. It seems to me that the zoning issue at hand is a well-intentioned, but near-sighted move by the Planning Board.

The restaurant brings an eclectic music venue to the residential area, providing a hub for creative-class individuals such as the young professionals and students of Greenville.  According to the research of Richard Florida of “The Rise of the Creative Class” fame, the informal and unorganized interactions between the young professionals and the rising generation form the backbone of a city’s economy. These interactions just don’t happen in homes or boutiques at the same level that they happen in a restaurant/music venue such as Dr. Unk’s.

Dr. Unk’s Oasis not only provides a great source of entertainment, food, and yes, alcohol for the young professionals, but perhaps most importantly it acts as a “third place” where relationships are formed, away from the desktops and fax machines.

I would humbly suggest that the Board consider the possibility that the interactions made possible by Dr. Unk’s contributed to the recent recognition by Forbes Magazine of Greenville as one of the top ten small metropolitan areas in the country for business and economy.

If one punishes local businesses simply because they are hard to categorize, one may unintentionally punish the local economy as well. I say allow Mr. Spengeman’s proposal for 30% food sales quota….and then enforce it objectively, as opposed to the seemingly arbitrary enforcement of the 50% quota now. The Uptown area may be able to keep a place more than a decent restaurant and music venue because of it.

Quick Hits: Easter Edition

  • We had a great service on Easter Sunday.
  • Our attendance was down, as expected. We were at about 50% our usual attendance (45ish). I think we counted 20?
  • Here’s the set list:
    • Go Outside by Robbie Seay
    • Into Marvelous Light by Charlie Hall
    • Spring of Life by Kristian Stanfill
    • Nothing But the Blood (Hymnal Intro) by Matt Redman
    • Beautiful the Blood by Fee
  • The band sounded wonderful today.
  • It was awesome hearing Donald’s operatic voice sing “Nothing But the Blood”. Very touching for me ( I love that hymn ).
  • I feel like I preached my guts out. Here’s a rough outline:
    • John 19 - A lot of attention paid to the clothes of Jesus. He goes through a purple robe, a crown of thorns, has His Jewish clothes ripped off of Him, and ends up dead wrapped in linen clothes.
    • Genesis 41:37-45 - Joseph, after having a coat of many clothes ripped off of him, saves an entire land and is adorned with linen clothes (v42). So between having clothes ripped off and being adorned with linen comes a saving act. Jesus has His clothes ripped off, dies on the cross, and is then adorned with linen. Following the Biblical pattern, the death of the cross is synonymous with Joseph’s dream interpretation: they save the people.
    • Leviticus 16 - The High Priest was to, once a year, offer a sacrifice for the atonement of the people. There were two goats involved: one to be killed to appease God, and another to bring the sins of Israel into the wilderness, to be forgotten forever. During this whole process the High Priest would wear…. linen.  Jesus is not only the High Priest who wears linen, but He is both the goat who is sacrificed, and because of the Resurrection, He can take our sins into the wilderness to be forgotten forever. When the entire work is done on the part of the High Priest, the High Priest removes all the linen from his body, and exits the temple.
    • John 20 - Jesus has left the building. All that remains is…. the linen clothing. He is naked. No longer needing the linen clothing. The work is finished. So if He left the tomb naked, and is still alive…what does He wear now?
    • Revelation 19 - He wears a robe dipped in blood. This is King Jesus. He is not only a great prophet who died, not only a high priest who offered Himself as sacrifice, lived to be our scapegoat, but in the end, He is the eternal King who will rule over us for eternity.
  • I gave a challenge to men and women in light of Revelation 19: is this the Jesus you serve, or have you wrapped Him in clothing of your own construction (purple robe, rabbi clothing, linen of a dead man?)
  • I got chills a couple of times while preaching. Our drummer was near tears. And this is a fireman who has fractured a guy’s skull with a single punch.
  • One of the most exciting things to me the entire day was having the bar employees stop what they were doing and listen…to the entire service, including the message. I don’t know if they were able to open at 12 :D .
  • By my count we have 100% of Easter’s attendance involved in Echo Groups. While not large in number, we are on our way to great health so far.
  • Looking forward to April!
  • He is risen indeed!

The Best Friday.

What Happened Today Two Millenia Ago

  • Our debt to God was paid and the wrath of God absorbed (propitiation).
  • Our past sins have been forgotten and thrown into the sea of forgetfulness (expiation).
  • We were atoned for by the High Priest.
  • We have been reconciled to the Father.
  • Christ became victorious over sin and death.
  • The death of death occurred because of the death of Life.
  • Harmony was restored by the Gardener.

Happy Good Friday.

Quick Hits.

  • Easter is going to rock people’s faces off. You want to be here with a friend. The message is like a fire….shut up in my bones. The music is going to be awesome. And lives will be changed.
  • We have over 60000 hits….on our Facebook ad.
  • Speaking of Facebook, I got a Facebook message today accusing me of being a “f&!@ing heretic”….for being too conservative. It’s no longer criticism…it’s comedy. I’m conservative enough to be Christian. Everything else is, as Driscoll puts it, “open-hand”.
  • Good dinner tonight with the hottest chick on the planet.
  • Looking forward to my Morning and Evening devotions coming in the mail via Amazon.
  • Did I mention Easter is going to be more awesome than a U2 concert on Mars?

Naked Jesus.

Naked Jesus

Here’s our flyer for this month’s meeting. It will be going into 1000 campus newspapers, on Facebook, in the dorms, all over campus, around the downtown area, and hopefully will make its way into area homes surrounding Dr. Unk’s.
