Being Christian and Enjoying Beer

Wanted to go ahead and throw this out there: I’m a devout Christian. And I enjoy a good beer. It’s not as if God turned His head away and oh! the barley fermented! What happened there? That wasn’t supposed to happen…no, in fact God created barley (and hops, water, yeast, etc.) for the purpose of making good beer. The key word there is good.

And as a enjoyer of God’s creation, I have every right to a good beer as I do to a good steak. In moderation. If you see me eating 9 steaks in a sitting, that’s not a good thing. It’s sin: gluttony. 9 beers in one sitting is a sin as well: drunkenness. We are to enjoy God’s creation in moderation. Any more, and we being to enjoy God’s creation more than we enjoy God Himself. Which is never a good thing.

You should also be respectful of circumstances. Don’t drink around known alcoholics. If you’re an alcoholic, you shouldn’t drink a beer any more than a convicted child molester should be an elementary school teacher. And one Bible verse for you: 1 Corinthians 10:31: Whatever you eat or drink or do, do it all for the glory of God. This, I believe includes everything. From running marathons to raising children to, yes, even drinking beer.

AMEN!!! I’m a devout Christian and a lover of good beer. In fact my friends and my favorite toast is “to the glory of God.” It just helps put everything in perspective.
