Come Upstairs

Here in Greenville, things are getting well underway on the business side of things. We have incorporated, written our bylaws (thanks, Nate), received our EIN number, opened a checking account, and budgeted for prelaunch. Now, we need your help. We are launching our initial fundraising campaign: Come Upstairs. In it we are asking 120 people to partner with us in prayer and in provision in hopes that once we “come down” from the upper room, we will change the world around us, just as the original 120 did. Please, visit the site, subscribe to our newsletter and give sacrificially to our planting fund! Come be a part of what God is doing in Greenville! Click here: ComeUpstairs.Com

The Devil, The Kingdoms of Men, and the Sovereignty of God

A couple of days ago I had a discussion with a friend on Luke 4:5-6, resulting from a sermon Greg Boyd delivered recently. If God is sovereign, how does the devil have control over all the kingdoms of the earth? My take is this: take heed to the wording of verse 6: they have been delivered to me. When we think about that thought, we should take into account Daniel 4:32. God rules the kingdom of men, and gives them to whomever He wills. It’s an amazing thought that God would deliver kingdoms and political organizations of men to the devil, Hitler, Mussolini, Pol Pot, George Bush, Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher, Saddam Hussein, Kofi Annan, etc. It doesn’t matter who they are, they are still subject to the authority and sovereignty of God (as per Romans 13:1). I can rest easy knowing that God is in total control of every political situation, regardless of what it looks like from the outside in.

Greenville Aflame

Lately, I’ve been rejuvenated after a rough week last week.

Come next year, we are going to set Greenville on fire. It will start uptown, and make its way outward, the metaphorical Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth. We have a God-given vision to see the world turned upside down in Greenville, and God’s going to make it happen. We are simply a kite in His hurricane. I’m nervous, scared, and worried. But I’m also excited, joyous, and anxious to set this place on fire with Harmony Church as the match!

Leadership Tips From David

Jeff Kapusta had a great, yet short, post on leadership tips drawn from David. Most of these I’d drawn out, but being reminded of them was wonderful and on time. Here’s the link: Leadership Thoughts From David

Hello: A Rundown of This Blog

I have no idea where you guys are coming from all of a sudden, but welcome! Feel free to subscribe (see right sidebar) by RSS or by email (same place).

My name’s Derek, and I’m a church planter in uptown Greenville, NC (planting Harmony Church). This blog is me sharing my thoughts on everything (literally), from the news, to church planting, to theology, to music and movies, and my beloved Philly Eagles. Please, I hope you stick around for a while, get to know me (and I get to know you), and we enjoy this ride together!

Grace.
